Causing Blade to become so crazy obsessed with this blog is one hell of an accomplishment. He went from anonymously saying anyone who would start such a blog has a sad life to threatening people anonymously to finally posting under his own name to anonymously starting his own blog that is way too boring and derivative to bother reading. If you think he bitches about the prices of toys now, just wait until he's lost whatever meager livelihood he had because he spends every moment of every day refreshing here. I have seen nothing that shows any sign that they have the slightest clue who actually runs this site. All I have seen so far are accusations against people and sites they have grudges against. I, being the one who posted that "paragraph long rant" DO have the knowledge to back up that post. I also have nothing to do with this site. Like I said, I don't know who runs this site. I wish I did because I haven't agreed with all of their comments either. But there are people who have the knowledge to know who YOU are, but wouldn't stoop to running a site like this one, or yours. Unfortunately since you are not the "site owner" involved in the long and running feud,you can not accept the olive branch on his behalf. That said had you been the site owner, you would have ended the juvenile back and forth and put things on the right path years ago. And like you said in your above post, you do not know the people involved with the LOLHISSTANK site, so it is possible some of the people we have inside information on are actually involved. But also like you said above it is pointless to "name" anyone, because they knew when they started this blog there is no way to link them to anything unless they slip up. Where you are mistaken however is nobody is holding a "grudge" against anyone "person" or "site". I get that you're adverse to what goes on here, but why are you playing "your enemy's enemy", if you will? Simply because you don't like the actions of this site? This site's entire purpose is to fuck with people. It's not like the Tank which is *supposed* to be a Joe site but full of shananigans and tomfoolery.
We would say the reason is, we have a really good sense of who is running the show behind this site. Meaning people who have been screwing with people online for years. We would like to see those people exposed. If they want to put on this site, then be up front and let everyone know who you are, then they can judge for themselves if "the site runners" are really here just to LOL as they put it, or if they really get their jollies from bringing people down, it comes down to motive. To be frank if their motive was simply to LOL, AND they didn't have anything to hide or loose by revealing who they really are on other forums, then they wouldn't have any problem sharing what their "real" online user names are.
I think anyone that thinks they have knowledge about who's behind this site should stop posting anonymously. It looks like they're having a conversation with themselves.
The RIPLOLhisstank site accomplished NOTHING. It just showed that people are easily offended and juvenile. Laughing at labels did what exactly? No one on this site was outed so it's still business as usually.

It's kind of hard to get attention when you post behind an secret identity. Like many of us they're tired of all the stupid comments that people post on a regular basis, and all the repeat idiotic comments by the same people, and this is a way of expressing that frustration. It's not just on Hisstank, but being the largest site, it's the most noticeable.
This site is a way to express the frustration with certain segments of the fandom and a way to hopefully make them realize how stupid they come across.
Think of it as a public service, a way to make the community better by pointing out the stupidity that runs rampant.
And oh yeah, if you think you know who these people are and want to attempt to out 'em, don't post anonymously. Step up and let everyone know who you are, don't hide behind your keyboard.
"Many of the "truth's" we cling too are based on our own point of view". What makes one person's opinions "stupid" to you may make them very valid to someone else. By singling out opinions that you don't care to agree with you are being a bigot. Unless you think that your fan community should only have people who have the same opinions as the people who run this blog. In essence what you are doing is singling out people whom you do not share the same opinions with to ostracize and ridicule. That my friend is exactly what the people who run this blog are about doing, and have been about doing long before they started this blog. Since you don't know who they are, you wouldn't know this.

There is nothing wrong with opinions. There is something wrong when the opinion of an adult is given in language/grammer of a 3rd grader.
That is what is stupid.
It's not the opinion that is stupid, it's the way the opinion is conveyed.
The internet is a visual medium, how things are written is just as important as what is written.
You want someone to take you seriously, then write seriously. Want someone to think you're stupid and ignore your opinion, then write like a 3rd grader.
Too often the people that are called out fall back on the "it's my opinion" arguement. Which is fine if it was their opinion that was called into question. But it's not the opinion, it's the presentation of that opinion.
When it's presented like a 3rd grader would, it makes the community look bad and the adult toy collector look bad. It creates a negative stereotype.
Also, some of the time, the posts called out as stupid are well... stupid. Ignorance of a topic is not an opinion, it's just ignorance. Showing a refusal to learn after repeated corrections is stupid, there's no denying that.
So again, it's not opinions that are being called out, it's the presentation of those opinions.
Well stated, have to say I agree with most of what you have to say. The part I disagree with is this platitude that some have in the community want to attain, some high hope that if they can rid the community of a "certain element" than society as a whole will have a different view of grown men who collect comic books, toys, or attend Sci-fi conventions. In reality those opinions are never going to change. What these people need to realize is that 1. they can be comfortable enough in their own skin to participate in this type of community because they enjoy it, regardless of what the stereotypes are that come along with it. OR 2. Realize that people outside of this communities opinions of them as people is more valuable to them than the hobby itself, and get out of the hobby. Unfortunately for those people the "community" as a lot of people like to refer to it, is what it is, you can't change it by ostracizing the portion of the community that you find dreadful. To make a comparison, would you ostracize the uneducated, uninformed, and financially less fortunate in every day life situations, simply because your association with them makes you look bad?

Of course stereotypes can change. It happens all the time. It takes awhile because the people that reinforce the negatives don't change.
But really, it's more of an "in-house" thing then the world at large. New collectors look to join the community all the time and the stupid posts make the community look bad and not the type of place anyone would want to join.
I know of a couple of people that get turned off by the immature people that act like children when they're really adults.
We're adults. It's time everyone started acting like it.
This site is working because the people that get called out are responding. The problem is that they aren't using it like a mirror to see their reflection and realize "wow, I look dumb".

To Nick's point, in reality most of the people who make posts that are perceived as "dumb" or make "childish" comments, most likely are trying to bring some kind of distraction into their lives from the pain of their daily existence. I am sure some of it is actual vindictiveness, but in the end its a distraction from life for them. And I ask how is ridiculing them here going to make their lives better, encourage them to change, see the light so to speak? The answer is it is not going to make them change, what in actuality is happening is the "lolers" are just giving them more of what they have had too much of in their lives already, people who discounted them, ridiculed them, and ostracized them. Giving them more of that, is not going to affect change. What it does do however, is create an environment of "inferiority" and "superiority". I would ask you, how does that create something that would seem inviting to new people regardless of their background?

For alot of people, posting on the forums is a fun distraction from work, life, the daily grind, whatever. And yet the vast majority of people are able to post coherently and intelligently.
But the few that don't want to, the ones that stand out because of it, it's okay for them because they have hard lives?
The ones that can't take the time to post as an adult are the ones creating the environment themselves. They are making an impression that the community is a bunch of immature jackasses.
How does that seem inviting?
Background has nothing to do with it. You can't tell someone's background from how they post on the forums. For every person with a troubled life that posts like a 3 year old, there are more from a similar life that actually post intelligently.
Less educated is a hard one to track. But at this age and if you have the ability to get on the computer in the first place, you have the ability to post coherently.
You're just trying to find some societal excuses for behavior that is on the forums only. Society at large, and a person's life beyond the screen, has no affect on how they write a post.
And that's the issue at hand: How they write a post. You don't have to be the most articulate person in the world, or even know the biggest words or even have the best grammar. But alot of these people, the "dumb" posters, don't bother.
So by creating an entire blog to essentially do the same thing "these people" do in reverse back to them is somehow building a "community" people want to partake in. I think many people, even those whom you would classify as "people who are able to post coherently and intelligently" have a hard time accepting that there would be any value in this. Having an equal and opposite reaction to the "ridiculed" people's action's doesn't solve anything. And everything in a person's life affects how they interact and communicate with others, your statement that,"Society at large, and a person's life beyond the screen, has no affect on how they write a post" is patently false.
Again this goes back to the idea, would the "loler's" create an environment "offline" to point out people's faults whom they disagree with, and who are less educated or "socially adequate" as they are, in order to ridicule them. I Agree with you Nick that it would be better to have a community of people of well spoken individuals who made quality comments every time they posted on a forum. Unfortunately that is not the case, and even though some may think creating a blog like this will resolve that, it will not resolve it. It makes all sides of the community look bad, and is a perfect example of perpetuating the stereotype you want so badly to avoid. That "non-collectors" think that grown men who collect action figures are "nerds" who spend their day arguing over "paint tint" and "who is better spoken in their blog post and who isnt". What this blog does is perpetuate what you are stating you want so badly to clean up, and that is the outside worlds perception of the "fanboy".
What's interesting here is that this blog was created to ridicule those that seem to be less than able to formulate a thought correctly when posting on hisstank, yet we all seem to go back to the site on a daily basis. I visit because I also frequent TFW2005, so like to check in on news from the other side of the house. I rarely post, because you'll always have those who cant speak, or those who feel that they speak for everyone.
If these people bother "you" so much, why bother going back? There are a ton of great sites out there (with JBL being at the top of my visited list) that could use the traffic. I completely understand the purpose of this thread, as it definitely provides a good chuckle, but I guess I just don't understand why we all continue to visit a website if A) it bothers us so much and we have no fun there because of certain people B) there's other great sites out there.

The difference between lolhisstank and some of the other genre's you mention is they actually are satirical. This site singles out individuals to ridicule and ostracize. There is "intent".
If a person were to "satire" the people running this site, their tone and demeanor would change just as what occurred if you read up on this topic a few paragraphs. The reason for this is they are not doing this blog for satirical purposes, they are doing it to get a laugh at the expense of specific individuals who they do not personally care for.
Right, and the irony of several of the posters? Guys saying they're never buying Joes again, then a week later talking about how they're mad that they can't find X figure. You think Trey and Matt from South Park like Scientology? You think they like Mel Gibson? You think every ribbing on SNL, Family Guy, and Robot Chicken is all in good fun? If so, then you are the most sheltered person to ever use the net.
If you're going to crusade against LOL, then you need to crusade against every rapper whose lyrics include disses at other MCs, political campaign ads, and show which survive solely on making fun of others (the Soup, South Park, SNL, etc.), and you can't ever make fun of anyone for anything ever again. If you do all these things, I will say that you are a far better person than I, but I highly doubt this to be true, which just makes you a hypocrite.
I don't listen to nor would I ever listen to any rap music. I find it sad that you can't find enough to entertain you in your "off computer" life, that you need to find outlets that exist only to bring people down. And by bringing people down that somehow brings happiness and joy. Please try and do some self examination, find out why it is that you find joy at other peoples expense, what in your life is leading you in that direction.
I hope you will take today "fathers day" to reflect on all the positive relationships you have made through the years LOLCOMMANDER. Think about the friends, the experiences at con's and gatherings that make the hobby of collecting enjoyable for you. I hope you will take a step back and think about the fact that by discussing grown men who whine about toys on a blog, you are in a sense whining about grown men who whine about toys on a blog. Only in our own minds can we justify behavior. One person can justify whining about toys, while another can justify making a point to single out the person who whines about toys. In their own mind they are justified and this brings them joy. To others, they are duplicating that persons behavior by singling them out for their own entertainment value.

Look man, I have no problem with people making fun of me. I'm sure there are things which could be taken out of context (or in context for that matter) to make me look like the fools whose posts have been highlighted here. The difference is that I don't give a shit. I'm secure enough in who I am and in my opinions that I don't give a shit if someone thinks they're dumb opinions. I stated within my circle of collector friends that if one of my posts was ever shown here on LOL that I'd laugh about it and comment "Well done, LOLCommander, well done". A few weeks ago I pointed this out on the "Assuage the masses" post. There are plenty of dumb things said which could be shown here, like the guy saying that reselling should be an offense punishible by law. That's pretty damn stupid.
I could site several examples where there were no contextual language issues in the posts, but they were simply copy pasted here in an effort to point out this bloggers distaste for that particular member of the community.
As has been stated ad nauseum, as difficult as real life is, why turn something that people use as a hobby into a platform for negativity. Why not create a blog to point out all of the "giving" and kindness and friendships that are established through this hobby. That would be a real contribution to the hobby itself.

Like many of us they're tired of all the stupid comments that people post on a regular basis, and all the repeat idiotic comments by the same people, and this is a way of expressing that frustration. It's not just on Hisstank, but being the largest site, it's the most noticeable.

Think of it as a public service, a way to make the community better by pointing out the stupidity that runs rampant.

"Many of the "truth's" we cling too are based on our own point of view". What makes one person's opinions "stupid" to you may make them very valid to someone else. By singling out opinions that you don't care to agree with you are being a bigot. Unless you think that your fan community should only have people who have the same opinions as the people who run this blog. In essence what you are doing is singling out people whom you do not share the same opinions with to ostracize and ridicule. ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with opinions. There is something wrong when the opinion of an adult is given in language/grammer of a 3rd grader.
That is what is stupid.
It's not the opinion that is stupid, it's the way the opinion is conveyed.
The internet is a visual medium, how things are written is just as important as what is written.
You want someone to take you seriously, then write seriously. Want someone to think you're stupid and ignore your opinion, then write like a 3rd grader.
Too often the people that are called out fall back on the "it's my opinion" arguement. Which is fine if it was their opinion that was called into question. But it's not the opinion, it's the presentation of that opinion.
When it's presented like a 3rd grader would, it makes the community look bad and the adult toy collector look bad. It creates a negative stereotype.
Also, some of the time, the posts called out as stupid are well... stupid. Ignorance of a topic is not an opinion, it's just ignorance. Showing a refusal to learn after repeated corrections is stupid, there's no denying that.
So again, it's not opinions that are being called out, it's the presentation of those opinions.
Well stated, have to say I agree with most of what you have to say. The part I disagree with is this platitude that some have in the community want to attain, some high hope that if they can rid the community of a "certain element" than society as a whole will have a different view of grown men who collect comic books, toys, or attend Sci-fi conventions. In reality those opinions are never going to change. What these people need to realize is that 1. they can be comfortable enough in their own skin to participate in this type of community because they enjoy it, regardless of what the stereotypes are that come along with it. OR 2. Realize that people outside of this communities opinions of them as people is more valuable to them than the hobby itself, and get out of the hobby. Unfortunately for those people the "community" as a lot of people like to refer to it, is what it is, you can't change it by ostracizing the portion of the community that you find dreadful. To make a comparison, would you ostracize the uneducated, uninformed, and financially less fortunate in every day life situations, simply because your association with them makes you look bad?

This site is working because the people that get called out are responding. The problem is that they aren't using it like a mirror to see their reflection and realize "wow, I look dumb".

To Nick's point, in reality most of the people who make posts that are perceived as "dumb" or make "childish" comments, most likely are trying to bring some kind of distraction into their lives from the pain of their daily existence. I am sure some of it is actual vindictiveness, but in the end its a distraction from life for them. And I ask how is ridiculing them here going to make their lives better, encourage them to change, see the light so to speak? The answer is it is not going to make them change, what in actuality is happening is the "lolers" are just giving them more of what they have had too much of in their lives already, people who discounted them, ridiculed them, and ostracized them. Giving them more of that, is not going to affect change. What it does do however, is create an environment of "inferiority" and "superiority". Background has nothing to do with it. You can't tell someone's background from how they post on the forums. For every person with a troubled life that posts like a 3 year old, there are more from a similar life that actually post intelligently.
Less educated is a hard one to track. But at this age and if you have the ability to get on the computer in the first place, you have the ability to post coherently.
You're just trying to find some societal excuses for behavior that is on the forums only. Society at large, and a person's life beyond the screen, has no affect on how they write a post.
And that's the issue at hand: How they write a post. You don't have to be the most articulate person in the world, or even know the biggest words or even have the best grammar. But alot of these people, the "dumb" posters, don't bother.
So by creating an entire blog to essentially do the same thing "these people" do in reverse back to them is somehow building a "community" people want to partake in. I think many people, even those whom you would classify as "people who are able to post coherently and intelligently" have a hard time accepting that there would be any value in this. Having an equal and opposite reaction to the "ridiculed" people's action's doesn't solve anything. And everything in a person's life affects how they interact and communicate with others, your statement that,"Society at large, and a person's life beyond the screen, has no affect on how they write a post" is patently false.

I Agree with you Nick that it would be better to have a community of people of well spoken individuals who made quality comments every time they posted on a forum. Unfortunately that is not the case, and even though some may think creating a blog like this will resolve that, it will not resolve it. It makes all sides of the community look bad, and is a perfect example of perpetuating the stereotype you want so badly to avoid. That "non-collectors" think that grown men who collect action figures are "nerds" who spend their day arguing over "paint tint" and "who is better spoken in their blog post and who isnt". What this blog does is perpetuate what you are stating you want so badly to clean up, and that is the outside worlds perception of the "fanboy".
ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting here is that this blog was created to ridicule those that seem to be less than able to formulate a thought correctly when posting on hisstank, yet we all seem to go back to the site on a daily basis. I visit because I also frequent TFW2005, so like to check in on news from the other side of the house. I rarely post, because you'll always have those who cant speak, or those who feel that they speak for everyone.

DeleteExactly, a lot of the posts here are totally out of context, and are an extreme stretch at best, grasping to try and find something to make fun of. We appreciate you making this quality assessment.
DeleteA few weeks ago I pointed this out on the "Assuage the masses" post. There are plenty of dumb things said which could be shown here, like the guy saying that reselling should be an offense punishible by law. That's pretty damn stupid.
DeleteI could site several examples where there were no contextual language issues in the posts, but they were simply copy pasted here in an effort to point out this bloggers distaste for that particular member of the community.

DeleteAs has been stated ad nauseum, as difficult as real life is, why turn something that people use as a hobby into a platform for negativity. Why not create a blog to point out all of the "giving" and kindness and friendships that are established through this hobby. That would be a real contribution to the hobby itself.
